The Lightning Conductor Web Part can not only roll up Tasks or Document Libraries, but any type of SharePoint List or Library either Out of the Box or Custom including Custom List Templates and Custom List Definitions.  It can also roll up lists that use a specific Content Type.

Some of the most common uses are Announcements, Contacts, Tasks, and Issues.  Imagine Announcements being made in sites across multiple site collections.  They are not really being announced to anyone other than Team Site Readers and Members.  Using the Lightning Conductor Web Part, the Announcements can be rolled up from sites and workspaces from throughout the site collections within your web application and presented in one web part.  The Web Part can be filtered so that it is only displaying relevant data to the person logged on.  Permissions are also in effect so that a user who doesn’t have read rights to either an item, folder or list will not see the item, folder or list in the Web Part.

Contacts, Issues and Tasks are also just as useful to roll up. It is useful to maintain a global contacts list made up of smaller contacts lists in the site collections,  or see all outstanding issues across multiple site collections.

You can very easily select the columns that you would like to display for a list simply by ticking the checkboxes.
